Kelly Nelson, MD 


Professor & Associate Medical Director
Department of Dermatology, Division of Internal Medicine
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center

Dr. Kelly C. Nelson is a Professor in the Department of Dermatology and Associate Medical Director of the Melanoma and Skin Clinic at MD Anderson. Her clinical and research work focuses on melanoma and skin cancer prevention, early detection, and improving access to dermatologic care, particularly in underserved regions.

She leads research efforts aimed at reducing disparities in melanoma diagnosis by combining educational programs, tele-mentoring, and geospatial analysis to help clinicians detect melanoma earlier.

Education and Training

  • MD: University of North Carolina School of Medicine (2004)

  • Dermatology Residency: University of North Carolina Health Care

  • Undergraduate: Davidson College – BS in Biology with a concentration in medical humanities.

Research and Leadership

  • Co-leader of melanoma prevention and early detection initiatives within MD Anderson’s Melanoma Moon Shot® program.

  • Developed DERM: Early Melanoma Detection, an interactive dermoscopy curriculum used to train dermatology residents.

  • Research includes diagnostic accuracy, geospatial approaches to melanoma detection, and education for clinicians in areas without dermatologists
